QI ZHANG

Qi Zhang is the recipient of the 2009 Alumni Award. He was born in Shanghai, China in 1992 and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was selected amongst thousands of applicants by the Junior Department of the Shanghai Music Conservatory at the age of nine. His daily routine included practicing seven to ten hours each day in addition to his studies.

In 2006, Qi Zhang came from Shanghai to compete in the Showcase Solo Intermediate Division and won first place in his event. A board member of the USOMC offered him an additional monetary scholarship beyond the "Gold Medal" and Cash Award for that division.

Qi has continued his musical studies and entered The Juilliard School, Pre-College Division in 2007. He is currently studying with Ms. Victoria Mushkatkol. He also attends the Professional Children's School in New York City and resides in Queens, New York. For the past 12 years of piano studies, Qi has successfully won the Shanghai Young Peoples' Piano Competition, the China National Piano Competition, and the Yamaha Asian Scholarship. In addition to his musical studies, Qi Zhang's favorite hobbies include basketball, football, movies, card tricks and journal writing.
